Effectively Using Abaqus DSP Tools With Noisy Explicit FEA Models

This training module focuses on DSP tools available in the FEA software package Abaqus that can be utilized to significantly improve the quality and accuracy of models solved with Abaqus/Explicit. Abaqus/Explicit can compute solutions that have very noisy results which are easily aliased and cause lots of problems with Mechanical Engineers unaware of how to properly work with such models & data. This course explains the features that Abaqus offers to help process such noisy data, and it teaches how to best apply DSP technology to obtain more accurate simulation results. This training is recommended for anyone using Abaqus/Explicit or for those interacting with data derived from Abaqus/Explicit.

Course Objectives & Benefits

  • Learn how to best apply the DSP features available in Abaqus to significantly improve your simulation quality and accuracy
  • Learn when and how to use Abaqus filtering: in the solver and/or during post-processing in Abaqus/Viewer
  • Learn about the differences of filtering History vs Field data, as well as non-invariant vs invariant quantities
  • Learn how to effectively use the Abaqus Operator Filter on noisy field data to guarantee to find the peak response over the entire solution
  • Explore the shock response spectrum capabilities exist in Abaqus

Testimonials

Dr. Diehl’s training is essential for engineers handling dynamic measurements across simulation and physical testing. It bridges modelers and instrumentation teams, distills best practices for data acquisition/processing, and equips users to process both simulation results and sensor data.
— Christopher Stout, Ph.D. Chief — Engineering Analysis and Evaluation Division, Picatinny Arsenal
Ted Diehl has the best material I have seen explaining aliasing and all the ‘gotchas’ in the measurement process.
— Luke A. Martin, Ph.D., Principal Engineer, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division
Ted Diehl is a fantastic instructor with lots of practical industrial use case examples. I highly recommend his classes to anyone post-processing Explicit FEA simulation results!
